Steering Joint
GMB Steering Joint
Automobiles run, turn and stop. "Turn" in these basic functions is undertaken by "steering joint" as safety-critical part. This mechanism is required with higher specifications and endurance every time automobiles improve overall quality along with the safety and driving comfort. Introduction of EPS increases demands for ruggedness. GMB developed the precision, high performance and longer endurance with designed clearance and ruggedness by cold forming spiders. Performance of steering joint also depends on the counterpart, yoke/housing. GMB collaborates with customers to optimise the setting required by car manufacturers and yoke specs. GMB's flexible attention to customer's requirements enables us to realize the superb performance and desired feeling.
Functions
Intermediate shaft situated in the limited space usually can not realize the power transmission as a single shaft. Universal joint mechanism by steering joint manages the connection with driving shaft to driven shaft at diffent angle. Normally an intermediate shaft consists of 2 steering joints. In order to achieve constant velocity at both end, ①same working angle ②same plane and ③same phase shall be maintained.
Basic rule of shaft assembly, constant velocity
- ①same working angle ; A = B
- ②same plane ; driving shaft = center chaft = driven shaft at same plane
- ③Yoke openings (forks) in driving shaft and driven shaft shall face sqaure on straight line.
Configuration, material(strength) and size of yoke may contribute to the overall performance of steering joint upon installation. GMB analizes the interelationship of these factors and decides tolerance of each component part in order to obtain smooth turning feeling by reducing rotational, radial and axial play.
Structure
GMB's cold forged spider as a function of innner shaft provides sufficient ruggedness in less mass volume. GMB's bearing case as a function of outer race is shell type cup precision-formed of special alloy steel. 3 principal sizes, φ15, 16, 19mm are available by GMB. Oil seal is constructed in 2 different types for 2 different conditions; "In-side" type used in space closed against outer environment and "outdoor" type used when exposed to dust and muddy water. High and cold temperature models are also available.
